[Technical Support] Webmail (Corporate) Interface Problem

I used the webmail interface (corporate version) for the first time yesterday, and ran into interface problems.

I was using IE7 (under XP), and when I selected an Inbox message from the list it appeared in the message window below, but without any way to reply, forward, etc. The IE status bar showed "Error in page"

Eventually I happened to click on the drop-down button beside the To: address in the message, and after clicking off the menu to close it the ribbon of Reply, etc buttons finally appeared above the message.

I just tried it in IE7 under Vista and in IE6 under XP, and get the same behavior. I also notice that changing the IE window from maximized to windowed or vice-versa also causes the buttons to appear.

In Firefox 2 (under XP) the buttons always appear, but they overlay the Date: field of the message. (I now remember seeing this behavior when I first setup my account.)

So, in what browser is the webmail system supposed to work in? Any hope for a fix?

Thanks.

Setup iPhone mail to access EmailThatWorksPDF Version

This document describes how to setup an iPhone to access an e-mail account setup with EmailThatWorks.net. This could
be a single user or a user in a delegated domain. The connection to the mail server is done via the IMAP protocol which
provides some nice features, including the very useful function of seeing and working on exactly the same mailbox you see
on your desktop. When you delete on the desktop itʼs reflected on the iPhone and vice versa.

		Select "Settings"
		Select "Mail"
		Select "Add Account..."
		Select "Other"

			Make sure "IMAP" is selected.
			Name: Your name
			Address: Your E-mail Address
			Description: description

			Incoming Mail Server

			Host Name: m1.imap-partners.net
User Name: your full username eg guy@emailthatworks.net
			Password: PASSWORD

Select “Save”, to store the settings. The iPhone will then verify that the settings are correct.
By default the iPhone will attempt to make SSL connections to the mail server. This is good, EmailThatWorks fully supports SSL and encourage the usage of it.
You can verify that this has indeed been done by reselecting the account youʼve just created and scrolling down to select “Advanced”.

From the “Advanced” settings you can see that port
“993” for IMAP has been set and “Use SSL”. This
means between the iPhone and the mail server all the
	traffic will be encrypted.
You can also see that the outgoing settings also show
SSL and port “587”, which is one of the default SMTP
ports (25 being the other). If your ISP blocks this port you can change this to “2525”.

This forum uses [markdown](http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/syntax#p), a very simple syntax, designed to be easy to write and edit. Some basics:

Separate paragraphs with blank lines, or end a line with two spaces for a hard break.
Special characters such as & and < are automatically quoted when needed, so you can just write naturally in most cases.

### Blockquotes

Put a greater-than (>) at the beginning of each line:

\> This is a blockquote.

comes out as:
> This is a blockquote.

### Code

Delimit `inline code` with \`back-ticks\`, or indent each line by at least 4 spaces or a tab.

10 PRINT "It displays like this"
    20 GOTO 10

### Hypertext references (links)

To make a link, put the text to display in \[square brackets\], followed by the relative or absolute URL in \(parentheses\).

> \[EmailThatWorks\]\(http:/\) comes out as [EmailThatWorks](http:/)

### And more...

[Technical Support] Forwarding spam off-box considered harmful

If you set up a DL (distribution list) that contains one or more addresses in a domain not on our server, or set forwarding to such an address, it can cause major problems for all of us. If the address in our system starts to get spam, and they all do sooner or later, we will be blamed as the proximate source of the spam. Our entire server's IP address will likely be blocked, and all our customers will be affected, unable to send mail to some of their correspondents.

The right way to set this up is to create a real user rather than a DL, and to set up antispam filtering on that user. A second filter would then redirect to another address only the mail that made it through the antispam filter.

If you need to add more users to a fixed account, [contact us](/support.shtml) to increase your userquota.

If you have a DL or user-forwarding set up this way, we can help you turn it into a user with an antispam filter and a subsequent filter to do the off-box forwarding. Just [ask us for help](/support.shtml), and you can stop reading here.

-----

But if you're the kind who likes forge ahead on your own, here's what it looks like at the command-line level. [Contact us](/support.shtml) to be sure we have your "expirejunk" feature enabled for the domain, at some number N of days, so you don't need to clean out the resulting Junk Mail box manually.

In the simple forwarding case, you just need to add the filters to the existing user and clear forwarding. Forwarding takes precedence over filters, so we can leave it in place until the filters are in, and we won't drop mail even for an instant.

    m1> FWD GET guest
    someuser@other.domain
    m1> filter import user.guest
    #@Mirapoint-Filter-1.0
filter "System Junk Mail Rule" fileinto "(mailbox=INBOX.Junk Mail)" allof stop
    :uce is "normal"

filter "everything else" redirect "someuser@other.dom" allof stop

    OK Completed
    m1> FWD CLEAR guest
    m1> FWD GET guest
    "" ""
    OK Completed

A filter with "allof" and an empty rule list matches everything, so anything that gets through the antispam filter will be forwarded to the off-box address.

-----

For a DL with only the one foreign address, we replace the DL with a user and the proper filters:

    m1> DLENTRY LIST foreigner
    someuser@other.domain
m1> user add foreigner "*" "Foreign domain user"
    OK Completed
m1> user set cryptpass foreigner "*"
    OK Completed
    m1> mailbox add user.foreigner
    OK Completed
    m1> filter import user.foreigner
    #@Mirapoint-Filter-1.0
filter "System Junk Mail Rule" fileinto "(mailbox=INBOX.Junk Mail)" allof stop
    :uce is "normal"

filter "everything else" redirect "someuser@other.dom" allof stop

    OK Completed
    m1> DL DELETE foreigner

Keeping the DL around while we create the user makes this process atomic, since a DL takes precedence over a user by the same name. Deleting the DL at the end drops all new mail through to the user, and his antispam filter. Setting the cryptpass (encrypted password) to "*" effectively blocks all logins. But you can set a regular password if you like, with "user set pass". This will let this user log in to check the Junk Mail box for false positives. Or you can set ACLs to permit other domain users to read this mailbox instead, for instance if there's no real person associated with it.

-----

If DL contains *both* on- and off-box addresses, you can keep the DL around to distribute to the local addresses, and make a user by the same name to do the filtering before going off-box. The named user must be a member of the DL.

    m1> DLENTRY LIST distributor
    alice
    bob
    someuser@other.domain
m1> user add distributor "*" "Foreign domain user"
    OK Completed
m1> user set cryptpass distributor "*"
    OK Completed
    m1> mailbox add user.distributor
    OK Completed
    m1> filter import user.distributor
    #@Mirapoint-Filter-1.0
filter "System Junk Mail Rule" fileinto "(mailbox=INBOX.Junk Mail)" allof stop
    :uce is "normal"

filter "everything else" redirect "someuser@other.dom" allof stop

    OK Completed
    m1> DLENTRY ADD distributor distributor
    m1> DLENTRY DELETE distributor someuser@other.dom
    m1> DLENTRY LIST distributor
    alice
    bob
    distributor
    OK Completed

That first DLENTRY ADD command adds the user (distributor) to the same-named DL, so the user will get a copy run through its filters, as will alice and bob. We then delete the direct DLENTRY going off-box, and voila: only things passing the antispam filter are sent off-box.

[Technical Support] Disk quotas and reservations

A customer asked us about quotas:

> [one user] has just started working at this address and is getting system warnings that she's nearly out of capacity. Just doesn't seem possible. I'm in nearly the same shape. I'm reading about 77% of capacity with very thin usage.

This is because you have a combination of domain-level and user-level storage (disk) quotas, which the system does rather oddly. When combined like this, the user-level quotas are not quotas but reservations, and their entire space is considered "used" at the domain level immediately. Two of you have 200MB "quotas", out of the domain's 600MB, which the other two users share because they don't have per-user quotas set. [This varies by domain, of course.]

If you wish, we can change the entire account to the "unlimited" type, where you are billed for actual usage only and the domain would have no quota (for disk or users). In that mode, we recommend using per-user quotas to manage your cost, but you can edit them directly, and they can sum to any value at all, even more space than exists on the server. Give everyone 5GB if you like.

Otherwise, in the "fixed" account type, we recommend against using per-user quotas at all, for this reason.

Contact [Support](/support.shtml) if you'd like us to change your account.

[Technical Support] Re: PDF Spam

Our antispam technology isn't affected one way or the other by attachments -- it treats the entire message the same, and grinds it up to generate signatures, then checks them against a clearinghouse to see if there is a large volume of mathematically similar messages being sent right then (an "attack"). So there isn't a specific control for PDFs at this level.

However, you can construct other filters that do look at attachments and their types. Do you get much legitimate mail with PDFs attached? From people not on your whitelist? If not, you could try making a filter that uses the "Attachment MIME type contains application/pdf", and refile into "INBOX.Junk Mail" or a separate bucket that you review from time to time. (We generally have Junk Mail set to autoexpire -- yours is set at 7 days -- but let us know and we can do likewise for other folders as well.)

In general, "PDF spam" is so easily described, and so many people receive little such email from legitimate senders, I predict it will be self-limiting. But in the short run, this is something you can do.

Has anyone found a way to control or eliminate the Quota messages from Outlook? Whenever my mailbox gets to be over 90% of Quota, I start receiving an endless stream of popup boxes from Outlook warning me of the situation. One popup would be fine, but every time I click OK, one or two more popups appear. Any suggestions (aside from the obvious one to delete messages) greatly appreciated!

I've been using Microsoft Outlook to connect to my IMAP account when I'm at work, and I've noticed that it creates a folder named "Junk E-mail" even though I don't use Outlook's junk settings on that account.

Is there any way to prevent Outlook from creating that folder? I have deleted it, but the next time I connect from Outlook it gets re-created.

We didn't think so, but indeed one setting was missed: recipientcheck. I just turned that on, so things should get a lot quieter again.

Recipientcheck means that we promptly reject mail to recipients that don't exist, in local domains. Like jxhXXXX@mydomain. Without it, we accept and later bounce, which causes the double-bounces that you guys were seeing as postmaster@ in your respective domains.

The new server was set (unlike the old one) to suppress showing this capability in certain cases. I just set it back to "ON"; please try it again.

We anticipate that everyone will use SMTP AUTH at all times, for our server, in conjunction with STARTTLS to encrypt the channel so the password (in AUTH) is not transmitted in the clear. If you can't get it to work with both of these settings, please let us know.

m1:587 is also available now as an SMTP setting. It should likewise get past ISP blocks of outbound port 25, and it's the port recommended in an RFC for "SMTP submit".
