Short answer: Yes. It doesn't let us configure this, however, and we had to drop SpamHaus for unrelated reasons. You should no longer see this problem.

Sorry for the long delay, there. Phorum doesn't reliably send us email, but you can always (well, nearly always) reach us directly. See http://www.emailthatworks.net/support.shtml

Apparently, the IP I am getting from my mobile provider is being blocked by the mail server because of a Spamhaus check. Spamhaus is listing the dynamic IP assigned to my phone in the CBL. I guess my next question is this: shouldn't the mail servers let me try to authenticate before checking DNSBLs?

This could very easily be a client end problem, but you don't get nothin' you don't ask for, so...

I've been using Chatter on a Palm Treo to send and receive mail for well over a year now with no problems, both on this server and on several others. In the last month, my account here at emailthatworks has had serious problems sending mail. I can still retrieve email with IMAP pretty much flawlessly, but I can almost never get email to send anymore the first time. The SMTP transaction seems to be stopping at the HELO stage. Resetting the Treo does not seem to make any difference. Any ideas?

I have noticed that recently I've been getting messages with an added part warning that the antivirus scan engine was unavailable. The original one-part message is now a two-part message with the additional part reading:

WARNING!!! (from m1.imap-partners.net)

The following message attachments were flagged by the antivirus scanner:

Attachment [2] , scan failed: Antivirus scan engine offline. Action taken: incomplete scan

Is there any way I can turn this off, so that if the system fails to scan a message--particularly one which consists of one plain-text part--it simply delivers the message in its original form without an added attachment?

POP before SMTP

A customer reports that our service works with his [Sharp UX-B800SE fax machine](http://www.amazon.com/review/R3F05VSVNU676D/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm), which requires POP-before-SMTP to enable [relaying](read.php?3,28), a thing that many other providers don't do, or don't do any more. We do it.

Here are our setup details for single-user accounts, specifically for POP users. Our [IMAP client setup instructions](read.php?3,15) are separate.

---

This information is for **new customers and users** of EmailThatWorks.net, to set up a POP client program to read and send email.

## You must complete these steps:

1. Know or find out your email address and password.
1. Choose a POP client program and install it on your PC.
1. Configure your POP client with server-specific details.
1. Test your POP client.
1. Test Webmail and set your password.

---

## Know your email address and password

Your email domain administrator will have created a user account for you on the mail server. It uses the same value for your Internet email address and your login username. We refer to it here as `user@domain`, though it may take one of several forms, such as `jdoe@example.com` or `john.doe@example.com`. Enter it exactly as written. Email addresses are not case-sensitive.

You should also have been told an initial password for the account. Passwords _are_ case-sensitive, so be sure to get capital and lowercase letters right.

---

## Choose a POP client program.

This is probably a foregone conclusion if you're looking here for POP client setup instructions. If you're setting up a new account and have to choose a client, consider using IMAP. But if you have a client that can only do POP, read on.

If there are problems installing the client software on your PC, you will need to find help locally; we cannot support customer systems or local network connectivity issues.

---

## Configure your POP client.

Use these basic settings that apply to all POP clients:

* **Email system type**: `POP` or `POP-3`

* **POP server settings**:
    * **POP server hostname**: `m1.imap-partners.net`
        * Don't forget the hyphen (-).
    * **Your real name**: whatever you like (e.g. `John Doe`)
    * **Your email address**: as above (e.g. `jdoe@example.com`)
        * The program will put this in the `From:` header on mail you send.
    * **Server login username**: **same as the email address**
        * This is called various things, but it's the one that goes with your password.
        * **Do not** use just the part of your email address to the left of the '@' sign, e.g. `jdoe`, or our server won't know what domain you're in.
        * If you are asked for your password here, enter it, or wait until it asks for it later.
    * **POP port number**: 110, the default (or 995 if SSL is enabled)
        * Generally when you check the SSL box, this number changes automatically.
    * **POP Security**: `SSL` or `SSLv3`.
        * Optional, but strongly recommended. This encrypts your entire session with the mail server, including your password, to protect it from eavesdropping in the network.
        * Do _not_ choose TLS here, or anything else you're not sure about, such as Outlook's "Secure Password Authentication", which has a nice ring to it but won't work here.

* **SMTP Settings** (outgoing mail)
    * **SMTP** server hostname: `m1.imap-partners.net` (same as for POP)
    * **SMTP port number**: 25 (the default)
        * Do _not_ use a different port, with [one exception](read.php?3,27)
    * **SMTP authentication**: `yes`
        * Optional, but you may not be able to send mail to other domains, ie. [relaying](read.php?3,28) without it.
    * **SMTP username/password**: same as for POP
    * **SMTP security**: `TLS` or `TLSv1` or `STARTTLS`.
        * This will encrypt your password in transit when you send a message.
        * Do _not_ choose `SSL` or `SSLv3` here; this server does not support that.

* Review any [client-specific caveats](read.php?4,18)
    * In particular, beware that using two POP clients, or a POP and an IMAP client, means that your email will be fetched down by the POP client and deleted from the server, at which point the other clients can't see it. We do not recommend "leave on server"; if you need this feature, use an IMAP client instead.

---

## Test your POP client.

1. Send yourself a test message, and see if you can log into the POP server and read it.
1. Delete the test message and be sure you know how your client handles deletions.
1. Find and try the Empty Trash function, or whatever your client calls it.

---

## Test Webmail and change your password.

It's a good idea to try [logging into Webmail](read.php?4,21) at this point. It can help give you another view of what's really in the server, as a doublecheck. And you should [change your password](read.php?3,30) from its initial value. This cannot be done through the POP protocol itself (with our server), but must be done over the web.

Be sure to use secure HTTP (HTTP-S) so you don't send your new, strong password over the Internet in the clear.

I was using IE7 (under XP), and when I selected an Inbox message from the list it appeared in the message window below, but without any way to reply, forward, etc. The IE status bar showed "Error in page"

Eventually I happened to click on the drop-down button beside the To: address in the message, and after clicking off the menu to close it the ribbon of Reply, etc buttons finally appeared above the message.

I just tried it in IE7 under Vista and in IE6 under XP, and get the same behavior. I also notice that changing the IE window from maximized to windowed or vice-versa also causes the buttons to appear.

In Firefox 2 (under XP) the buttons always appear, but they overlay the Date: field of the message. (I now remember seeing this behavior when I first setup my account.)

So, in what browser is the webmail system supposed to work in? Any hope for a fix?

Thanks.

This forum uses [markdown](http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown/syntax#p), a very simple syntax, designed to be easy to write and edit. Some basics:

Separate paragraphs with blank lines, or end a line with two spaces for a hard break.
Special characters such as & and < are automatically quoted when needed, so you can just write naturally in most cases.

### Blockquotes

Put a greater-than (>) at the beginning of each line:

\> This is a blockquote.

comes out as:
> This is a blockquote.

### Code

Delimit `inline code` with \`back-ticks\`, or indent each line by at least 4 spaces or a tab.

    10 PRINT "It displays like this"
    20 GOTO 10

### Hypertext references (links)

To make a link, put the text to display in \[square brackets\], followed by the relative or absolute URL in \(parentheses\).

> \[EmailThatWorks\]\(http:/\)  comes out as [EmailThatWorks](http:/)

###  And more...

things we can do. (1) Delete enough mail so a 32MB message will fit. That's the maximum size of a message that we allow. (2) Increase your quota temporarily. I've done (2), adding 100MB.
Forwarding spam off-box considered harmful

If you set up a DL (distribution list) that contains one or more addresses in a domain not on our server, or set forwarding to such an address, it can cause major problems for all of us. If the address in our system starts to get spam, and they all do sooner or later, we will be blamed as the proximate source of the spam. Our entire server's IP address will likely be blocked, and all our customers will be affected, unable to send mail to some of their correspondents.

The right way to set this up is to create a real user rather than a DL, and to set up antispam filtering on that user. A second filter would then redirect to another address only the mail that made it through the antispam filter.

If you need to add more users to a fixed account, [contact us](/support.shtml) to increase your userquota.

If you have a DL or user-forwarding set up this way, we can help you turn it into a user with an antispam filter and a subsequent filter to do the off-box forwarding. Just [ask us for help](/support.shtml), and you can stop reading here.

-----

But if you're the kind who likes forge ahead on your own, here's what it looks like at the command-line level. [Contact us](/support.shtml) to be sure we have your "expirejunk" feature enabled for the domain, at some number N of days, so you don't need to clean out the resulting Junk Mail box manually.

In the simple forwarding case, you just need to add the filters to the existing user and clear forwarding. Forwarding takes precedence over filters, so we can leave it in place until the filters are in, and we won't drop mail even for an instant.

    m1> FWD GET guest
    someuser@other.domain
    m1> filter import user.guest
    #@Mirapoint-Filter-1.0
    filter "System Junk Mail Rule" fileinto "(mailbox=INBOX.Junk Mail)" allof stop
    :uce is "normal"

    filter "everything else" redirect "someuser@other.dom" allof stop

    OK Completed
    m1> FWD CLEAR guest
    m1> FWD GET guest
    "" ""
    OK Completed

A filter with "allof" and an empty rule list matches everything, so anything that gets through the antispam filter will be forwarded to the off-box address.

-----

For a DL with only the one foreign address, we replace the DL with a user and the proper filters:

    m1> DLENTRY LIST foreigner
    someuser@other.domain
    m1> user add foreigner "*" "Foreign domain user"
    OK Completed
    m1> user set cryptpass foreigner "*"
    OK Completed
    m1> mailbox add user.foreigner
    OK Completed
    m1> filter import user.foreigner
    #@Mirapoint-Filter-1.0
    filter "System Junk Mail Rule" fileinto "(mailbox=INBOX.Junk Mail)" allof stop
    :uce is "normal"

    filter "everything else" redirect "someuser@other.dom" allof stop

    OK Completed
    m1> DL DELETE foreigner

Keeping the DL around while we create the user makes this process atomic, since a DL takes precedence over a user by the same name. Deleting the DL at the end drops all new mail through to the user, and his antispam filter. Setting the cryptpass (encrypted password) to "*" effectively blocks all logins. But you can set a regular password if you like, with "user set pass". This will let this user log in to check the Junk Mail box for false positives. Or you can set ACLs to permit other domain users to read this mailbox instead, for instance if there's no real person associated with it.

-----

If DL contains *both* on- and off-box addresses, you can keep the DL around to distribute to the local addresses, and make a user by the same name to do the filtering before going off-box. The named user must be a member of the DL.

    m1> DLENTRY LIST distributor
    alice
    bob
    someuser@other.domain
    m1> user add distributor "*" "Foreign domain user"
    OK Completed
    m1> user set cryptpass distributor "*"
    OK Completed
    m1> mailbox add user.distributor
    OK Completed
    m1> filter import user.distributor
    #@Mirapoint-Filter-1.0
    filter "System Junk Mail Rule" fileinto "(mailbox=INBOX.Junk Mail)" allof stop
    :uce is "normal"

    filter "everything else" redirect "someuser@other.dom" allof stop

    OK Completed
    m1> DLENTRY ADD distributor distributor
    m1> DLENTRY DELETE distributor someuser@other.dom
    m1> DLENTRY LIST distributor
    alice
    bob
    distributor
    OK Completed

That first DLENTRY ADD command adds the user (distributor) to the same-named DL, so the user will get a copy run through its filters, as will alice and bob. We then delete the direct DLENTRY going off-box, and voila: only things passing the antispam filter are sent off-box.

I must have checked that the BIS hub used IMAP-S, but I don't now recall. I didn't see an option to turn it on. But as a domain admin, you can check your login logs and see the type of connection it's making. I'd be interested to hear more about your Blackberry implementation. Have you integrated the Blackberry Enterprise Solution into your e-mail architecture, or are you using the more straight forward Blackberry Internet Solution?

Is it possible to use EmailThatWorks calendaring functionality with the Blackberry device?

Whichever Blackberry solution you're using can you enable TLS/SSL cryptographic protection for the whole session across the communications bearer?

Thanks in advance.

The first thing you enter (after logging into BIS) is your email address. It won't automatically know the corresponding host, as it does for e.g. Yahoo and Gmail, but it gives you a second chance (select the box for "I will provide the settings to add this email account"). Keep insisting that you're not stupid, that you just want to tell it the details.

When you finally get the form, it should look like this:

    Email address: santa@northpole.int (well, your email address, not his)
    User Name: santa@northpole.int (your entire email address again)
    Password: *********                 (whatever)
    Email server: m1.imap-partners.net (that's a one, not an ell, in "m1")

(next)

I just tested this again, and it worked. So it _can_ work, at least.
