      <description><![CDATA[Only that the server almost certainly isn't changing anything unless another client is giving it commands.  There may be another IMAP or POP client running, or a Webmail session.

We do automatic expiry of messages in Trash and Junk Mail folders, optional by domain, but never INBOX, and only in the middle of the night (starts at 23:00 PT daily).]]></description>

      <title>Outlook cannot move messages into folders</title>

      <description><![CDATA[I have encountered a new problem with Outlook.  For the past several days, I cannot move certain messages from my Inbox into another folder.  When I try, there is a error message:  &quot;Cannot move the items.  The operation cannot be performed because the message has been changed.&quot;

The workaround is to close down Outlook, reopen it, and then go ahead and move the message.

I haven't noticed anything special about the messages that cannot be moved.  I'm not editing them (at least not knowingly).

Setup iPhone mail to access EmailThatWorksPDF Version

This document describes how to setup an iPhone to access an e-mail account setup with EmailThatWorks.net.  This could 
be a single user or a user in a delegated domain. The connection to the mail server is done via the IMAP protocol which 
provides some nice features, including the very useful function of seeing and working on exactly the same mailbox you see 
on your desktop.  When you delete on the desktop it&amp;#700;s re&amp;#64258;ected on the iPhone and vice versa.


	
		Select &quot;Settings&quot;
		Select &quot;Mail&quot;
		Select &quot;Add Account...&quot;
		Select &quot;Other&quot;
		
		
			Make sure &quot;IMAP&quot; is selected.
			Name: Your name
			Address: Your E-mail Address

	Select “Save”, to store the settings. The iPhone will then verify that the settings are correct. 
By default the iPhone will attempt to make SSL connections to the mail server. This is good, EmailThatWorks fully supports SSL and encourage the usage of it. 
You can verify that this has indeed been done by reselecting the account you&amp;#700;ve just created and scrolling down to select “Advanced”.



	From the “Advanced” settings you can see that port 
	“993” for IMAP has been set and “Use SSL”.  This 
	means between the iPhone and the mail server all the 
	traf&amp;#64257;c will be encrypted.
	You can also see that the outgoing settings also show 
	SSL and port “587”, which is one of the default SMTP 
	ports (25 being the other).  If your ISP blocks this port you can change this to “2525”.

      <description><![CDATA[We've only heard one or two customers who discovered the delay inherent in greylisting, and the overall spam level has dropped dramatically.  So we're calling this a success.

Here's the graph from the week when we did this.  The overall volume has come back up -- this was during the holidays -- but it's still impressive.  The &quot;No Retry&quot; fraction shows the effect of greylisting in isolation, more or less.  But the RBLs are set to reject (rather than accept and bounce) so they also had an effect on the &quot;Junk Mail msgs/minute&quot; figure.

      <description><![CDATA[Spam has been getting worse than ever, faster than ever, and we have responded.

Today we enabled two more antispam features in the mail server, `m1.imap-partners.net`: MailHurdle (a form of greylisting), and one realtime black-hole list (RBL).

You may see some short delays in legitimate mail as the MH database is built.  And you may see some rejections from the RBL.  Please report any problems to [Support](http://www.emailthatworks.net/support.shtml).

To exempt a recipient address from greylisting, but not from all antispam scanning, send a note to [Support](http://www.emailthatworks.net/support.shtml) requesting that we set that up for you.

You might see a lot of press about &quot;image spam&quot;.  Our current base AS technology does not rely on extracting text from the content of a message to detect &quot;keywords&quot; so it is not fooled by this.  The sheer volume of spam lately means you may see a greater number of uncaught spams, and a greater fraction of those may contain images, but the number caught is proportionately increased.  We can suggest steps you can take to measure the number of caught vs. uncaught spams, if you want to get some idea of the total.

The following two-part process seems to result in Outlook 2003 storing sent messages in the IMAP 'Sent' folder rather than in its own .pst file 'Sent Items' folder:

1) In Outlook, go to Tools / Options / Preferences / E-mail options. Uncheck &quot;Save copies of message in Sent Items folder&quot;.

2) Still in Outlook, go to Tools / Rules and Alerts / E-mail Rules / New Rule / Start from blank rule. Create an &quot;after sending&quot; rule to move a copy of all messages to the (IMAP) Sent folder.

### Caveats:

*Our server is currently running a software patch that breaks PINE's ability to see personal folders resident on the IMAP server.  (It was necessary to get another, more popular client to work correctly, and we had to choose one over the other.)  INBOX works OK, folders on local disk are unaffected, but if you need IMAP folders, consider another IMAP client.*

### Pine with IMAP

To set up Pine to use IMAP, enter Setup (S), then Config (C), and set the `inbox-path` variable:

replacing user@your.domain, of course, with your **entire email address**.  If your Pine client does not support SSL for security, omit those options:

We strongly recommend using SSL whenever possible.  The SSL certificate on this host (m1.imap-partners.net) is indeed signed by a verifiable certiying authority (CA), but Pine will not verify this without having more information fed to it.  Using the `/novalidate-cert` option will suppress the warning messages on startup, though this is cheating.

(On Mac OS X, [Fink](http://pdb.finkproject.org/pdb/package.php/pine-ssl) users will need to install the `pine-ssl` package to get SSL to work.)

If you want to avoid the `/novalidate-cert` hack, you may need to [teach OpenSSL about our CA cert](http://gagravarr.org/writing/openssl-certs/others.shtml#ca-openssl), the identity of which is left as an exercise to the reader.  Again, with `pine-ssl` from Fink, this will need to be in `/sw/etc/ssl/certs`.  Here's what it looks like in one working example:

### Pine folders in IMAP server

*See Caveat, above.  IMAP folders and PINE currently don't work on our server.*

By default Pine stores all folders other than your INBOX (as configured above) in the &quot;folder collection&quot; on your local disk.  You can add another collection to see and manage folders on the IMAP server:

Hit S (Setup), L (collectionLists).  (This is not one of the first pageful of options visible in the Setup menu, but you can see it if you scroll down a bit.)  Hit A (Add):

    Nickname  : imap
    Server    : m1.imap-partners.net

When you hit Enter after the hostname it will connect and figure out the next field, &quot;Path&quot;, which should end up blank.  You can leave &quot;View&quot; blank.  Save with ^X and use $ to reorder the collections so this one comes first if you like.  Hit E to Exit setup.

Not on a message server.  /madmin will pick the proper interface when used on either a Message Server or a Message Director (another Mirapoint product), and it seems to be what Mirapoint expects one to use these days.  I haven't seen anything that says /miradmin is deprecated -- yet.

There is also /acctadmin, which gets you the pre-MOS-3.4 version of the same.  This  is also what regular users see (those without administrator or domain-admin privilege).  But everyone can start with /madmin and they will end up in the right place.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[Mulberry was designed and written by the same people who wrote the Cyrus IMAP server, so it's very well-behaved and efficient in protocol terms.  Of the early IMAP clients, it's one of the best, and has a very mature offline mode (where testing can be spotty in others).  It makes a good diagnostic tool, since it only does what you tell it.  Its blend of accounts and identities, and easy control over things like arbitrary headers, makes it good for the sophisticated user.

The user interface is a tiny bit idiosyncratic, but the Cabinets feature is very useful once you grasp the concept.

The company that developed it, Cyrusoft, went through liquidation and Mulberry was unavailable for a while.  But as you can see, it's back now, under different terms.

Mulberry works well with our service, and the latest version had no known problems.

Finally, after much effort, I have regained the rights to Mulberry and am making it available for free as of today. See:

Some things to note:

1) It is free to anyone - no registration codes needed.

2) A new v4.0.5 version is available on the website. This simply removes the registration requirement and updates copyright notices etc.

3) There is no formal support for the product as there was before. Instead 'community' support via mailing lists and other resources will be used. I will make a best effort to respond in a timely fashion to issues, but see note (4) below.

4) This effort is purely a personal one on my part - all the work I do on this is being done in my (limited) spare time.

5) It is free but not open source. That's an issue that we can discuss moving forward...

6) Also, major new features/revisions etc are out of the question right now (though I have a few pet projects that were being worked on before and which I will likely continue). Fixes to existing problems will be done as time allows. Hopefully if we find a way of dealing with issue (5) that may change - but that's really going to depend on the level of interest from people willing to commit their own time to this as opposed to one of the other open source equivalents.

Hopefully those of you still using Mulberry and hoping to continue to do so for a while at least will find this good news.

      <description><![CDATA[We don't recommend [Outlook Express](read.php?4,23) for use as an IMAP client with our service:

Outlook Express (OE), while distributed free with MS Windows and hence ubiquitous, is a rather poor IMAP client when seen from the server end.  If you leave it running all the time, and tell it to check mail every 5 minutes in all your mailboxes, it makes a *new IMAP connection* for each one.  There could be hundreds, and it multiplies.  This is totally unnecessary given the design of the IMAP protocol, and it's very hard on the server: the assumption with IMAP is that one logs in once and stays connected all day, so login is a comparatively expensive operation.  If you must use OE, please at least use a longer interval than 5 minutes, and don't leave it running overnight.  If we see thousands of IMAP logins every day for your account, we might send you a note asking you to please turn it down.

[Thunderbird](read.php?4,17) runs on Windows, it's free, puts its Sent, etc., folders on the server by default in the right location, and it can even deal with shared folders.  If you haven't committed to a client yet, or you're frustrated and shopping around, and you run Windows, we recommend you look at [Thunderbird](read.php?4,17).]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[OK, it's not an IMAP client, but it is an important way to access our system.  It's useful to read and send email from computers where you can't or don't want to install a full IMAP client.

## To login to Webmail Direct:

* https://m1.imap-partners.net/

Where it says &quot;User&quot; enter your **entire email address**.  Passwords are _case-sensitive._

That gets you the default, secure (https) login page, for the Corporate Edition of Webmail Direct.  It is most like a desktop IMAP client in its operation.

Once there, you can read and send mail, and access certain [account administration] features, such as changing your password, or defining server-resident filters.

On **slow networks** Standard Edition is better: click on the link in the login page, or go directly to:

### Caveats

* Mail.app v2.1, in Mac OS X 10.4, doesn't seem to use the IMAP protocol feature for **subscriptions** (See [RFC-3501](http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc3501.txt), section 6.3.6, if you're that sort of person).  It will show you all the mailboxes the server will tell it about, which can be a problem if there are many (possibly shared) mailboxes on the server.

* Corollary to the subscription problem, there are also reports that it makes **offline mode** unwieldy in the same circumstance.  One user said that it wanted to synchronize 3,000,000 messages.

* Using different **identities**, i.e. choosing one of several `From:` addresses as you compose a message, is not well supported.  Multiple IMAP accounts sharing other fields (hostname, login username) might be a workaround, but we haven't tested this yet.

* Apple has made using server-resident Sent, Trash, and Draft mailboxes so &quot;easy&quot; it's hard: You have to select the **target mailbox** on the IMAP server first, then use the `Mailbox` -&gt; `Use This Mailbox For` menu items to enable its use for one of these functions.  You must think backward (for English speakers): &quot;Over here, I want to put X.&quot;  This alters the behavior of the apparent, or perhaps &quot;virtual&quot;, Sent, etc., mailbox (the large icon at the same hierarchical level as the main &quot;Inbox&quot; tray), makes the target mailbox *disappear* from its real position, and to get it back you have to select the corresponding &quot;virtual&quot; mailbox and do Get Info (right-click or cmd-I) to find the checkboxes you can un-check.]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[[Thunderbird](http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/) is free, runs on several platforms (Windows, Mac, and Linux, at least), and is a good overall IMAP client.

It has an Extensions capability with a very active community, so you can make it look and feel pretty much as you like, and even esoteric features needed by sophsticated users (such as &quot;Redirect&quot;) are available with a few more clicks.

In some other clients you'd think the headers were supposed to be secret, but regular users do need to see them sometimes.  Thunderbird, un-extended, has a keyboard accelerator for View Source.  Hooray!

### Caveats: None

[Mulberry](read.php?4,38) users on Macintosh will miss cmd-D (delete) and cmd-E (expunge).  We have yet to get this to work with a Thunderbird extension, but it's only a matter of time.]]></description>
